Surya, the Sun God, occupies the central place amongst the nine planets (navagrahas). His colour is red and his vahan (Vehicle) is a chariot run by seven horses.
The Wheat is his symbolic grain, the symbolic Flower is lotus, his Gem is ruby,his Fabric is red clothes,Food is rava, wheat and chakkara pongal.
Surya is the only form of God that can be seen every day. Surya is the real energy and source of life. Surya is also known as Surya-Narayan.
Surya, is also respected as one of the eight forms of Lord Shiva. Surya is the lord of excellence and wisdom. God Surya is regarded as an aspect of Shiva and Vishnu by Shaivites and Vaishnavas respectively.
According to the scientific fact, the whole universe is based on the process of photosynthesis which takes place due to the presence of Surya (the sun).
It is believed that Surya has been worshipped since ages to receive the kind blessings of almighty God. Surya is usually remembered for the brilliance and light in one's life.
A Namaskar (Joining the Palms) and Offering water pleases him. Surya is believed to be the deity capable of curing sick people.
As per the Science,sunlight is a rich source of Vitamin-D. The Gayatri Mantra and Aditya Hridayam of Sage Agastya, are associated with Surya.
Symbol of Surya is regarded as one of the most auspicious and divine signs of the Hindu religion. People place the sign of the Sun on the top of main entrances as they beleive. it would brings them a good fortune.
Sanjana and Chhaya
Surya, Sanjana, & Chhaya
The first consort of Suryadev was Sanjana (Ganga). Yama and Yami were the children born to them. Sanjana was unable to bear the heat of the sun and returned back to her father home.
While leaving the Suryadev's house, she created a look alike form of her and named her 'Chhaya' and placed her as Surya's wife Sanjana. She told Chhaya to keep everything a great secret.
Later on, Chhaya gave birth to five more children from Suryadev. As she had her own children, she started giving step motherly treatment to Sanjana's children and very badly cursed Yama and Yami.
Later, Yama became the God of death and Yami got transformed into the river Yamuna. Surya could not believe to see a mother cursing her children so badly and suspected a foul play.
Angry Suryadev interrogated Chhaya to know the truth and looking at Suryadev's anger she got feared to told the real story. Suryadev with his power Immediately located Sanjana.
He was sitting in penance at Himalayan mountains chanting his name like "japnaam". Suryadev soon reduced his intensity and convined her to come back home. Thereafter they gave birth to the divine Ashwini twins and led a happy life.
God Surya and Kunti
Sage Durvasa gave a boon to Kunti that she could invoke any god she desired and beget children from him. Out of curiosity, Kunti chanted the mantra on the Sun god and he appeared before her.
Kunti requested him to go back and apologised for the act she committed. She tries to convince him that she was just trying out the effect of mantra.
She further requested that she was just a young girl and he should listen to her plea. However, God Surya clarified that he was aware of the boon.

Furthe God Surya warned her that she had to give herself to him, otherwise he would finish up her father and the brahmana who hand over the Mantra to her.
As Kunti understood thatthere was no escape, she surrendered herself to him after certain promises from him. As per the sources, God Surya did not have physical relation with her.
He impregnated her through his divine power so that she remained virgin. Later on Karna was born to Kunti.
