Causes of Jaundice in new born babies

Blood group incompatibility

This type of jaundice takes place when there is incompatibility between the blood types of the mother and baby.

Physiological jaundice

It is the most common cause of newborn jaundice, which is usually evident on the second or third day of life. However it is a harmless condition. The reason for jaundice at this age is the inability of the newborn's immature liver to process bilirubin from the accelerated breakdown of red blood cells. But Jaundice goes away as the baby's liver gets matured.

Breastfeeding jaundice

Due to inadequate adequate breast milk intake this type of jaundice takes place. Insufficient milk production by the mother is the main cause. Due to inadequate intake, dehydration occurs in the baby and also fewer bowel movements for the newborn, resulting in subsequent decreased bilirubin excretion from the body.

Breast milk jaundice

This type of jaundice takes place in the category of breastfed newborns, due to perticular chemicals in breast milk and usually seen after 7 days of life. However it is usually a harmless condition, but mothers do not continue breast feeding.
