There are 3 types of headaches as follows -

a) Vata Headache : Throbbing, pulsating, migrating pain in the back of your head is an indication of a vata headache. In such type there can also be neck and shoulder tension, back stiffness, signs of toxicity in the colon and unresolved fear and anxiety.

b) Pitta Headache: There are shooting, burning, penetrating pains which may be associated with nausea, dizziness. If the headache starts in temples by spreading to the central part of your head, you can trace your problem back to pitta-related imbalances in the stomach and intestines.

c) Kapha Headache: If the headache is accompanied by a cough or a runny nose, or gets worse when you bend down, you have a kapha headache. This may occur in winter or spring, strikes in the morning or evening. In this type the pain starts in the upper frontal area of the skull, moves down to the forehead, and can creep into the sinuses. These headaches are caused by sinus congestion, colds, flus, hay fever, and other allergies.

Cause for Headache

Most of the headaches can be relieved by using ayurvedic remedies but some are not. In case of headache for more than a couple of days, neurological symptoms such as blurred vision, weakness in your arms or legs, midnight headache and feeling to vomit then it should be shown to doctor.

Headaches can also be due to insomnia, food allergies, wrong diet, excess traveling, exposure to cold temperatures, neck tension, working too long on computer. Even sleeping on two pillows can give you a headache.

Headache, which is occasional, that comes due to having missed meal or habitual cup of coffee in the morning,is nothing much to worry about.A severe headache is more like a symptom of some underlying problem than a disorder itself and therefore, it is vital you find out what the cause.

As per the Ayurveda, it could indicate a nervous system that is highly sensitive or a digestive system that is functioning below expectation. If natural remedies do not apply then one should visit a physician to find out the real cause.

Headaches are a feeling of tenseness in the neck, shoulder and scalp, whereas migraines are pulsating headaches, generally on one side of the head. The symptoms of migraines vary from person to person and even from one migraine attack to the next.

It is advisable to avoid excessive caffeine, alcohol, phenylethylamine found in chocolate and cheese, tyramine found in nuts and fermented meats and soy and aspartame present in many artificially sweetened foods. During headaches be away from celphone, laptop and TV.

10 Home Remedies for Headaches

1 - Ginger

Ginger is best known home remedy for instant relief from headache. It reduces the inflammation of the blood vessels in the head which relieves from the pain. Ginger also stimulates digestion,that helps quell the nausea which occurs during migraines.

Use:
a) Steep ginger root and make tea.
b) Prepare a mixture of equal parts of ginger juice and lemon juice and consume it 1 - 2 times a day.
c) Apply a paste of ginger powder and 2 tablespoons water on your forehead for a few minutes to get fast relief.

2 - Peppermint Oil

Peppermint inhaling gives quick relief.This Oil has refreshing scent which opens up the clogged blood vessels. Sinve it has menthol, it regulates the blood flow.

Use:
a) Mix 3 drops of peppermint oil in one tablespoon of almond oil, or just add a little water and massage the temples or the back of your neck with it.
b) Apply crushed peppermint leaves on your forehead.
c) Add1 tsp of dried peppermint to a cup of boiling water and make tea by covering it and steeping it for 10 minutes. Strain and add some honey to make it sweet. on consuming this tea one gets relief.

3 - Cinnamon

Cinnamon is one of the most effective remedies to treat headaches. Use: Grind some cinnamon sticks into a powder and and add some water to it makinga thick paste. Apply it on your forehead and temples and rest for about 30 minutes.It gives a quick relief.

4 - Thyme

Use: Apply 1 - 2 drops of thyme on each temple and on your forehead. Rub gently into the skin, then rest for about 1 hour and get relief from headache.

4 - Clove

Cloves has cooling and pain-relieving properties hence it is very effective to get rid of headache.

Use:
a) Mix and stir the crushed clove in hot water.Cover the head with a cloth and inhale the vapours of hot clove liquid.
b) Put 2 drops of clove oil in a tablespoon of coconut oil plus sea salt and gently massage your forehead and temples with it.
c) Crush some cloves and wrap them in a potli and inhale the smell to get some relief from the pain.

5 - Basil

Basil has many analgesic benefits. It relaxes the tight muscles and relieves from headaches caused by tension.

Use:
a) Put 3 to 4 fresh basil leaves in a cup of boiling water and let it simmer. Mix honey and sip the tea slowly.
b) Chew some fresh basil leaves, or inhale the steam after boiling basil in a pot of water.

6 - Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar can give relief from headache as it restores the acid-alkaline balance in the body.

Use:
a) In a saucepan add 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar and 1/2 cup of water, then boil the mixture in and covered it. Keep it on a table, hold a towel over your head and slowly inhale the steam. This will provide instant relief from the headaches.
b) Eat a piece of apple sprinkled with salt and drink some warm water after it.
c) Add 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water, with honey and a splash of lemon juice. Drink it 2 or 3 times a day.

7 - Green Tea

Green tea which is rich in antioxidants, is an effective remedy for headaches. Boil green tea and squeeze in the juice of half and lemon and drink warm. Green tea should be taken in limits.

8 - Vata Headache

Use:
a) During Vata headache, boil one teaspoon of powdered haritaki in a cup of water and drink.
b) Gently massage your neck with warm vacha (calamus) root oil.
c) Lie down on the backg and put five drops of lukewarm sesame oil in each nostril.

9 - Pitta Headache

These headaches are due to imbalances in the stomach and intestines.

Use:
a) Eat cucumbers, cilantro, and dates to calm down the Pitta.
b) Take two tablespoons of aloe vera gel three times a day.
c) Put three drops of plain, warm ghee, in each nostril at bedtime and massage scalp with warm coconut oil.

10 - Kapha Headache

a) Take 1/2 teaspoon of sitopaladi powder three times a day with honey.
b) Put one drop of eucalyptus oil in hot water, cover your head with a towel, and inhale the steam to get relief.
