Causes of Constipation

There are different type of constipations, such as - Occasional constipation, Chronic constipation, Age-related constipation, Pregnancy constipation and Travel based constipation. Other types can occur due to following causes -

* Diet change - Eating more greasy food than usual or new weight-loss planning. any change in your diet could trigger the odd bout of constipation.

* Less Fluids - Not consuming enough water leads to constipation.

* No exercise - Lithargic lifestyle slowers metabolism, which hinders the digestion and causes constipation.

* Medication - Some medicines bring the body system to a slower functioning causing constipation.

* Excess consumtion - Excess of fat or processed food, alcohol or caffeine.

Ayurveda Remedies for Constipation in Children

1 - Stomach Massage

Softly give massage on the stomach to your baby, with fingertips and in clockwise manner. Massage around the naval portion.This will give the baby relief.

2 - Excercise

Keep your baby on the back. Hold the legs in half bent position. Steadily move babys legs in cycle paddling style. It will loosen up the intestines.

3 - Sugar Solution

Mix half teaspoon of sugar (preferably brown sugar), in an ounce of water and feed this solution to your baby 3 times daily before feeding the regular food.

4 - Prune Juice

Feed diluted prune juice to baby's' bottle which will help to get rid of constipation.

5 - Dark Corn Syrup

A mix of 4 ounces of water and 1 teaspoon of dark corn syrup will cure baby's constipation very effectively. This remedy should not be used if sugar solution is given.

6 -Warm Bath

Warm water bath gives full relaxation to the stomach muscles relieves constipation.

7 - Anus Lubrication

By apply a proper lubricant to your baby's anus, the excretory passage will give relief in bowel movement.

8 - Brown Sugar

Boil 1 oz of water and after cooling add half a teaspoon of brown sugar to it. Feed this solution to your baby 3 times daily, just before feeding milk.Continue this until the stool softens.

9 - Castor Oil

Castor is the most effective and commonly used remedy for constipation. Dip the stalk of betel leaf in castor oil and introduce it in the rectum of the baby. For children of more than 2 years old, give a mixture of 1 tbsp of castor oil and a glass of milk.

10 - Raisins

Soak 5 raisins in water for the whole night and crush them well the next day. Strain it and give the raisin liquid to regulate the bowel movement of the child.

11 - Milk

Take a glass of milk with 2 teaspoons of honey or sugar. Mix well and feed it to your baby in morning, on an empty stomach. The stools will be passed smoothly.

12 - Herbal Tea

Take 2 cups fresh mint and 2 cups of anise leaves and mix it with 2 quarts of boiled water.Steep it till the water cools down. Feed four ounces at a time.

Ayurveda Remedies for Constipation in Adults

1. Triphala powder or churna

Triphala powder is combination of - amla (Indian gooseberry), haritaki (Chebulic Myrobalan) and vibhitaki (Bellirica Myrobalan). It is a very effective laxative and regulates the digestion and bowel movements.

Use: Take one teaspoon with warm water (or add with honey), on an empty stomach, everyday morning or before going to bed.

2. Raisins (kishmish)

Raisins are full of fibre and they aret natural laxatives. This is a great remedy for pregnant women, without any side-effects of medication.

Use: Soak a handful in water overnight and have every day morning on an empty stomach.

3. Guavas (amrood or peru)

Guavas have soluble fibre in the pulp and insoluble fibre content in the seeds. They also help in mucus production in the anus and also inperistalsis (movement of passage of food in the stomach).

4. Lemon (nimbu) juice

Lemon (nimbu) juice cleans the intestines and the salt content helps in quick and easy passage of stool. This juice helps in detoxication of body.

Use: Mix one teaspoon of lemon juice in a glass of warm water and add a pinch of salt to the solution. Consume the juice on an empty stomach.

5. Figs (Anjeer)

Figs are great natural laxative, packed with fibre should be taken either dried or ripe.

Use: Boil few figs in a glass of milk and have it in warm condition, before going to bed.

6. Flaxseeds (Alsi)

Flaxseeds are packed with fibre content which are very effective for constipation.

Use: Have a handful of Flaxseeds with warm water early in the morning.Also you can mix flaxseeds in your cereal every morning.

7. Castor oil (Arandi ka tel)

Castor oil is used since ages as a perfect remedy for constipation and has properties to finish the worms in intestines .

Use: Direct consumtion of castor oil may not be liked so a tablespoon of it should be added to a warm glass of milk. Have this mixture before going to bed.

8. Spinach (Palak)

Spinach cleans and reinstates the intestinal tract.

Use: Mix about 100 ml of spinach juice with equal quantity of water and have it every day 2 times. This is a very effective remedy for constipation.

9. Oranges

Oranges are source of vitamin C packed with a large quantity of fibre content.

Use: Two oranges one in the morning and one in the evening gives a great relief from constipation. They should be eaten without peeling off the white threads to get added advantage.

10. Seed mixtures

Seed mixture is packed with fibre which not only relieves from constipation but also helps in rejuvenating the intestinal walls.

Use: Take 3 sunflower seeds, til or sesame seeds, a few flaxseeds and almonds and grind together making a fine powder.Have one tablespoon every day, for a week.This can also be added to salad or cereal every morning.

Diet tips to avoid constipation

Maintain healthy food habits.

Avoid foods that contain white flour like maida, white sugar and other processed foods.

Eat light regular meals, and make sure you eat at least 3-4 hours before you go to bed.

Include fruits and vegetables into your daily diet.

Add condiments like jeera, haldi and ajwain in your food while cooking.

Drink at least seven glasses of water every day.

Have a glass of warm water every morning and night.
