Cold brings with it a runny nose, nose congestion, sneezing, cough and at times a mild rise in the body temperature.
There are four distinct types of coughs as follows -
Dry Cough : A dry, hacking cough is often caused by an infection of nose and throat.
Croup Cough : Croup is usually caused by a viral infection.
Wet Cough : A wet cough is caused by fluid secretions and mucus found in the windpipe and lungs.
Whooping Cough : In this, the child will breathe deeply, making a "whooping" sound.
Home made Remedies for Children
Infants up to 6 months
1 - Garlic and Ajwain pouch
Garlic with Ajwain (carom seeds) is very effective remedy since its anti-bacterial and anti-viral.It is a strong weapon against cold and congestion.
Use: You need 3 things to make this potli or pouch- garlic, carom seeds and a clean muslin cloth.
Take 2 big cloves of garlic and dry roast, then take 1 tbsp of ajwain on a tawa till it cools down. Make it into a tight pouch with a clean muslin cloth.
Place this pouch in the cradle where baby sleeps. The emantion of the garlicky ajwain smoke helps to open the blocked nose and provides relief from congestion.
Caution: Do not keep the pouch near your baby.

2 - Panikoorka
Perennial, a fleshy plant, is used for treating cough in babies and it is a natural anti pyretic and expectorant.
Use: The Panikoorka leaves are wilted on the stove top, cooled down and then put on the baby's forehead. It absorbs the water and the leaves dry up which relieves the baby from congestion of cough.
3 - Oil massage
Mustard oil has warming effect which relieves the congestion. Garlic and carom seeds have anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. It helps to give your baby a much needed relief.
Use: Take about quarter cup of mustard oil and heat it (a pinch of ajwain can also be added for betterment). Crush two garlic cloves and add them to the mustard oil.

Caution: No intake of oils or herbal medicines are encouraged for babies.
4 - Kesar / Saffron
Rub the Kesar tilak on stone pad and make a paste. Apply the tilak (tikka) on baby's forehead sole and sole at night.
Saffron tilak has property to absorb the accumulated water in baby's forehead.
5 - Drumstick leaves hair oil
Warm 1/2 cup of coconut oil in a heavy bottomed kadai and add a handful of tender green drumstick leaves to it till the leaves are wilted.
Apply to babay as hair oil during cold, cough and congestion.
6 - Turmeric paste
Mix turmeric powder with a small quantity of water and make a paste. Take it in a ladle and heat it till it is warm.
Apply the luke warm turmeric paste on the chest, forehead and feet of child. The heat from the turmeric absorbs the phlegm and relieves the baby from cold and cough.
Infants above 6 - 7 months
7 - Carrot juice
Add Fresh carrots juice to boiled water and cool down to room temperature,It is effective for cold and cough.
Please make sure you have introduced carrots and your baby is not allergic to it before giving the juice.
8 - Warm mustard oil massage
Take mustard oil and warm with a few kalonji seeds (nigella sativa) and 2 garlic cloves, then apply on baby's chest, on nose, on feet and palms.
9 - Ajwain kadha
Take 1/2 cup water, 1/3 cup jaggery, 1 tbsp Ajwain,5 Black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon turmeric, 8 basil(Tulsi) leaves, 1/2 teaspoon dry ginger powder, 1 clove,
Boil all together for 10 minutes till the quantity reduces to 75 %. Strain the mixture and cool it down and then feed it to your baby.
Feed 1 teaspoon twice a day after meals.
If you are giving allopathic cough syrups, do not give this ajwain kadha
10 - Nilgiri oil
It is extracted from the Eucalyptus tree and is effective in relieving respiratory issues, clearing the sinuses. It is also a expectorant and hence is used for relief from cold. Take some cotton and dip it in nilgiri oil. Place it in the room where baby sleeps and it will give relief to baby.
11 - Garlic ajwain potli rub
The garlic and ajwain pouch rubbing on the baby's chest is veryb effective. Warm up first on a tawa(flat metal disc), place the pouch on warm tawa. This medicated pouch helps clearing the chest.
Infants 7 - 9 months
12 - Rasam
Rasam made of tomato and garlic soup should be given to babies of 7 months and above.
13 - Ajwain water with jaggery
Boil 1 cup of water with a pinch of ajwain and 1 teaspoon of jaggery. Filter it and cool it down, then give 1 tbsp once a day to your baby.
14 - Fennel seeds and ajwain infused water
Boil 1 cup of water with 1 tbsp fennel seeds and a pinch of ajwain seeds.Filter it and cool it down, then feed your baby 2 teaspoons a day morning and night.
Infants 9 - 12 months
15 - Lady's finger soup
Green lady finger helpsto baby get relief from cold and cough. Boil the finely chopped 1 lady finger with 1 glass water for 10 minutes. Filter it, cool it down, then give it as a soup.
16 - Jaggery, cumin and black pepper in warm water
Take a mixture of 1 tbsp of Jaggery powder, a pinch of Cumin seeds and 1 Black pepper. Boil the mixture in 1 cup of water for 10 minutes. Filter it, cool it down and feed to your baby 1-2 teaspoons to once a day.
Infants 1 - 2 years
17 - Honey
A lick of 1 teaspoon plain honey helps to soothe the irritated throat and cold.
18 - White onion juice
Extract the juice of white onion and feed 1 teaspoon to the child. It relieves from cold, cough and congestion.
19 - Ginger and honey
A mixture of grated ginger and honey should be given at regular intervals which helps in soothing the throat, respiratory tract and provides relief from cough.
20 - Lemon Juice and honey
Mix lemon juice, and honey and a little warm water and give it your baby to drink.
21 - Turmeric milk
Milk with turmeric called as 'Haldi doodh' is a very famous remedy and is very effective for dry coughs. It is made by boiling a glass of water with a pinch of turmeric.
Turmeric has rich medicinal qualities and it helps to fight the illness and provide fast relief. The warm milk helps your baby with a nice and uninterrupted sleep.
22 - Ginger coffee
Prepare a mixture of 2 cloves, 2 cardamom, 2 pepper corns, 1 tbsp jaggery powder, 2 tuli(basil) leaves, 2 ginger slices and boil in water. Strain and feed this to the child.
23 - Dry Ginger Coffee
Crush 1 inch piece ofdry ginger and 2 pepper corns roughly. Boil 1 block of jaggery in water and let it dissolve. Add the mixture of dry ginger and pepper corns and then tulsi leaves to it. Once the leaves get wilted, switch off the flame. Strain the liquid and feed your baby after it is warm.
24 - Ginger and Tulsi mix
Crush both ginger and tulsi to extract the juice. Add honey and feed your child.
25 - Clove honey mix
It keeps cough in controll and provides a sound sleep.Take Dry roasted 5 cloves and grind it well and cool down. Add honey to it and give it before going to bed.
26 - Tulsi, ginger and black pepper
Mix 5 tulsi leaves, 1/2 inch ginger, 2 pepper pods and boil in 1 cup of water. Strain, cool it and feed your child.
Infants 2 - 4 years
All above mentioned remedies also work.
27 - Ginger and salt crush
Crush ginger and add salt to it then give it to your toddler to get rid of sore throat, cold and cough.
28 - Homemade jaggery balls
Prepare small balls by mixing turmeric powder, ghee and jaggery powder. Feed your child to gets relief from cold, cough or sore throat.
Infants 4 years & above
All above mentioned remedies also work.
29 - Gargling with honey, lime and warm water
Gargle with honey, lime and warm water which helps to clear off the throat and nose.
30 - Salt water gargle with turmeric
Add a pinch of turmeric powder to salt water and then ask your child to gargle with it.
31 - cough mix
Prepare a powder by mixing quarter tbsp jeera(cumin powder), small piece of dry ginger, 1 pepper corn and rock sugar medium size cube.Consume a small pinch of this powder and get relief.
Remedies for Adults
32 - Jaggery solution
Boil water with black pepper, add cumin and jaggery to it. It will give you relief from chest congestion.
33 - Saute garlic
Saute some garlic cloves in ghee and cool it down then consume itto fight the common cold and cough.
34 - Ginger tulsi mixture
Take the juice of ginger, crush tulsi leaves to it and add honey. Have it to get relief from a cough.
35 - Ginger and salt
Cut ginger into pieces and add salt to it. Chew it to fight cold, cough and a sore throat.
36 - Flex seeds
Boil flaxseeds until it thickens and strain it. Add a few drops of lime juice and honey. Consume the mixture for cold and cough relief.
37 - Lemon
Add honey to lime water and warm the water and consume it to controll the cold and cough.
38 - Honey
A teaspoon of brandy and honey gives relief from cough.Brandy increases the body heat, whereas honey helps fight the cough.
39 - Water
Luke warm water is effective to fight the common cold, cough and sore throat. Drinking warm water reduces the inflammation in the throat and helps replenish the fluids in the body and clears the infection.
40 - Cinnamon
Prepare a mixture of lemon, honey and cinnamon to prevent a common cold. Put some honey in a pan, boil until it is thin. Then add a pinch of cinnamon and lemon. Have this syrup to get relief from the cold and cough.
41 - Milk and turmeric
Warm milk and turmeric mixture is a very commonly used and effective way to fight a cough.
42 - Ginger tea
Put about 7 tbsp fresh grated ginger in a 1 quart glass and add a pinch of cinnamon. Bring the water to a rolling boil and then gently pour it into the jar over the ginger and steep for about 40 minutes. Cover the jar to keep all evaporating essential oil goodness right in your cup. Filter it and you may add honey and lemonto it. Drink 3 times a day.
42 - Honey - Onion
Slice 1 red onion evenly and keep it in the jar, then pour a honey layer over it. Continue to add onion and honey. Cover tightly and let it sit overnight for about 10 hours.Take 3 spoonfuls an hour from the mixture in the jar.
43 - Carrot juice
Carrot juice helps to fight a cough.Drink it to prevent cough and get the benefits of carrot juice.
