Cholesterol is part of the food we eat daily,which is waxy, fat-like substance found in all cells of the body. Our body needs cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin D, and other vital substances.

Being fatty,the cholestrol does not mix with blood and is carried in small packages called lipoproteins. These lipoproteins contain fats. High level of cholesterol can lead to serious health problems. Cholesterol tends to accumulate along artery walls and increases your risk of developing heart disease.

Usually, blood cholesterol levels should remain below 200 mg/dL. It is considered borderline high when it is between 200 and 239 mg/dL, and when it increases to 240 or higher mg/dL it is regarded as high cholesterol.Generally a test called Lipid profile is done periodically, to check the cholesterol levels such as - total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Ratio and triglycerides.

LDL - Low-density lipoprotein, which is known to be bad cholesterol

HDL - High-density lipoprotein, which is known to be good cholesterol.

It is observed that younger men have lower HDL levels than women while younger women have lower LDL levels than men.After age of 55, women have higher LDL cholesterol levels than men.(LDL)

Causes of Cholesterol

* Saturated fat in food.
* Egg yolks, meat and cheese.
* Overweight.
* Lack of exercise.
* Heredity.

21 Ayurveda Remedies for Cholestrol

1 - coriander seeds

Take 1 glass water,add 2 tbsps of coriander seeds to it and boil it for 20 mins.Strain the mixture and cool it down.Consume this mixture 3 times a day.

2 - watermelon

Dry the seeds of watermelon in the sun and then roast and crush them into fine powder. Take 1 tsp of watermelon seed powder and add to 1 glass water to mix it well. Have this mixture once evry day.

3 - basil leaves

Mix 12 basil and 12 margosa leaves and crush them to a paste. Add 1 glass of water to it and mix it well.Consume this mixture every day once on an empty stomach.

4 - Indian gooseberry or amla

Mix 1 teaspoon of Amla powder in a glass of warm water and drink it daily in the morning on an empty stomach.

5 - Apple Cider Vinegar

Mix 1 teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink this two or three times a day at least for a month. The amount of apple cider vinegar may be increased to 2 tablespoons per glass.For good taste it can be mixed with fresh orange juice, grape juice, or other fruit juices.

6 - Orange Juice

Every day drinking of 3 cups of fresh orange juice is a great help in reducing blood cholesterol levels naturally, being rich in C vitamin, folate, and flavonoids. A study also proved that drinking 750 mL of pure orange juice daily can increase HDL cholesterol and triglycerides, and decrease the LDL/HDL ratio.

7 - Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has saturated fat but it is considered a beneficial home remedy for high cholesterol. Coconut oil contains lauric acid that helps increase HDL (the good cholesterol) and improve the LDL/HDL ratio.Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of coconut oil to food daily.However refined or processed coconut oil should not be used.

8 - Garlic

As it is known since ages that garlic is best remedy for lowering the cholestrol.The anti-clotting properties and sulfur contents of garlic balances the cholesterol level and reduces the formation of plaque in blood vessels and prevents clots that can cause heart stroke.

Buy single petals of garlic from the market.In the norning before brushing the teeth eat one petal by biting and chewing it.This should be followed every morning and one will experience best results.Also grated peeled raw garlic can be eaten with salad dressings, dal or soups.

9 - Nuts

Nuts are loaded with healthy monounsaturated fats, proteins, fiber, nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants.Eat a handful of nuts every day.Nuts such as - Peanuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, pistachios, pecans, and other nuts reduce blood cholesterol.Walnuts contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids which can lower your LDL by 15 percent.

10 - Oats

Oats are the traditional cholesterol buster which is packed with soluble fiber and contains beta-glucans.It helps in reduction of the absorption of cholesterol and lowers down its level naturally.The LDL can be dropped by 12-24 %, if 1 cup of oatmeal is eaten regularly.

11 - Onion

Make juice of ionion and add one teaspoon of honey in a teaspoon of onion juice.Consume it on daily. Also, in 1 cup of buttermilk, mix 1 finely chopped onion along with 1/4 teaspoon of pepper and consume it daily.

12 - Honey

Honey is added with various ingradients which makes it an ultimate cholesterol fighter.Take 1 cup of hot water and add 1 teaspoon of honey to it. Add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice or 10 drops of apple cider vinegar to this solution. Consume it every morning.

This reduces excess fat from your system and maintain cholesterol level. One more mixture is as follows - Mix 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon in a cup of boiled water and cover it for about 30 minutes.Strain this solution and add 1 teaspoon of honey to this concoction. Consume it half an hour before your breakfast on an empty stomach .

13 - Soyabean

Soybeans, which has 10 times more calcium than meat, contains magnesium, phosphorus, protein, calcium, B-complex vitamins and iron. Eating soya nuts, soybeans and other food products made from soy (tofu and soy milk) are the modest way to reduce the production of new cholesterol. Consumtion of even 20 grams of soya protein every day reduces the high cholesterol by about 5 %.

14 - Brown Rice

One cup of brown rice contains 11 percent fiber and it is affluent in lots of minerals and vitamins. For lowering the cholesterol level, white rice should be replaced with brown rice, as its bran contains highly saturated oil which plays a vital role in balancing the cholesterol levels.

15 - Brinjal / Eggplant

Brinjal contains vitamin B1-B6, dietary fiber, potassium, manganese, niacin, folate, copper and many more essential nutrients that maintain blood cholesterol levels. Brinjal also contains nasunin, a free radical scavenger that improves the blood flow by relaxing the walls of blood vessels.

Use brinjal in your regular food to reduce the cholesterol risk.It can be eaten in various preparations such as - fried, stuffed, grilled, marinated or roasted.

16 - Chocolate

Chocolate is a very good antioxidant to maintains the HDL cholesterol levels. The cocoa flavanols and plant sterols in dark non-milk chocolate reduces the LDL cholesterol by 2 %. The flavonoids in chocolates keep the arteries clean.

1 Ounce of chocolate (not milk chocolates) daily can boost up the good cholesterol and prevent the bad cholesterol from oxidizing.

17 - Red Wine

Red wine, because of its polyphenol antioxidants is beneficial in lowering cholesterol levels. For women 5-ounce glass of wine daily, while two glasses for men is recommended.Grape juice also provides equal benefits like red wine.Alcohol can hike the HDL cholesterol level by about 7-12 %.

18 - Tomato

Tomatoes contain lycopene,which lowers the level of LDL cholesterol.Cooking tomatoes with some oil helps your body to absorb more lycopene. Tomatoes can be just munched or tomato juice be sipped daily.

19 - Beets

Beets contain carotenoids and flavonoids, which raises the good cholesterol levels. It also contains vitamin-C, fibre, folate, manganese and potassium that heal various ailments.Beetroot juice direct or combined with other fresh fruit juice is advisable.

20 - Margarine

Margarine, which has zero cholesterol, is packed with plant sterols that help lower the levels of bad cholesterol(LDL).Taking it regularly reduces the cholestral level by 10 percent.

It can also be eaten by spreading on toast.lots of carrots, spinach and sweet potatoes should also be consumed to compensate the margarines property of reduction in beta-carotene absorption.

Precautions for Cholestrol

c. Drink 6 - 8 glasses of water daily.

d. Quit smoking.

e. Fresh fruits.

f. Eat fish like salmon, mackerel, sardine and tuna.

g. Avoidl animal fats.

i. Use Olive oil, rapeseed oil and sesame oil.

j. Eat carrots, broccoli and spinach.

l. Turmeric and Curry leaves are mentioned as having cholesterol lowering properties and may be added when preparing various dishes.

n. Guggulu (commiphora mukul) is good for cholesterol lowering.

o. Avoid excess of alcohol.
